Eagle Tavern Sign
I am arranging to have the Eagle Tavern sign delivered back to us next week. But I just wanted to help clarify what I have discussed with Valerie Hunt about what we can do with the sign in the future. Here is an excerpt from a recent email."there was very little paint remaining on the sign and we would try IR photography. I did so and there is nothing left to pick up. I did determine, however, using specular light what the sign actually said at one time, which I thought was very interesting. Since there is no paint to restore, there is little actual conservation work to do on the sign, that is, there is nothing which can be brought back. When we met in Williston, we did talk about that as being a possibility. If the Historical Society chooses, you can have a reproduction made by a sign maker and preserve this artifact as is. Perhaps if you mounted it and lit it with raking light, visitors could see the shapes of some the letters. The reason we can see the shapes of the letters is that the paint at one time protected the wood from the weather, as the paint wore away, it created a slight relief in the wood--one being less weathered than the other."
Perhaps this can discussed at the next Board meeting.

By the way, I spoke with Val today about the sign. She will bring the sign back to Williston tomorrow (6/15). She said that what she saw printed on the sign is: Eagle Hall. It doesn't say Eagle Tavern. I'm sure the name may have varied through the years, but that is what she relayed to me.
